Through the Lens: The Remarkable Life of Photographer Neville Waller
From photographing The Beatles during their historic 1964 Australian tour to capturing prime ministers, royal visits, international events and the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, Home Care Assistance client Neville Waller has spent more than four decades documenting remarkable moments through his camera lens.
Now living on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, Neville’s story is one of adventure, creativity and an extraordinary career that placed him behind the camera for some of Australia’s most memorable moments.
From Copyboy to Professional Photographer
Born in Drummoyne, Sydney, in October 1943, Neville’s journey into photography began when he joined Australian Consolidated Press (ACP) as a copyboy after leaving school.
In 1961, he commenced a photographic cadetship with The Daily Telegraph before moving to ACP’s magazine division. It was an incredible time to enter the industry. The Swinging Sixties were beginning, Australia’s music scene was flourishing and Beatlemania was about to sweep across the country.
Working with Everybody’s Magazine, Neville photographed some of the era’s biggest names, including Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs, Johnny O’Keefe, Normie Rowe, The Easybeats and a young Olivia Newton-John.
Before long, one assignment would place him at the centre of music history.
Photographing The Beatles’ 1964 Australian Tour
When The Beatles arrived in Australia in June 1964 for what would become their only Australian tour, Neville was there with his camera. Two days after their rainy arrival in Sydney, Neville and reporter Jim Oram boarded an Ansett Fokker Friendship flight with the band to Adelaide. Neville photographed The Beatles aboard the plane and captured their arrival in Adelaide, where enormous crowds lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the world’s biggest band as their motorcade travelled through the city.
But The Beatles weren’t Neville’s only encounter with rock royalty.
When The Rolling Stones toured Australia, Neville photographed their Sydney concerts before flying to Brisbane with the band, sitting alongside Brian Jones during the flight. His assignment even included an unforgettable day water skiing with The Rolling Stones on the Brisbane River.
These were experiences few people could imagine – but for Neville, they were all part of life behind the lens.
Capturing Australia’s History Through Photography
As Neville’s career progressed, his assignments expanded far beyond music.
Working across some of Australia’s best-known publications, including The Australian Women’s Weekly, The Bulletin and Woman’s Day, Neville photographed royal tours, the opening of the Sydney Opera House, the opening of Parliament House and Australia’s Bicentenary celebrations.
His photography also took him around the world, documenting significant international events including the Kampuchean refugee crisis, Vietnam’s post-war recovery and the overthrow of Ferdinand Marcos in Manila.
Closer to home, Neville travelled extensively throughout Australia, photographing locations ranging from Kakadu and Marble Bar to Tasmania, Kangaroo Island and the Great Barrier Reef.
Photographing Australia’s Political Leaders
Australian politics became another fascinating chapter in Neville’s career.
He photographed Gough Whitlam on election night in 1972 and captured Bob and Hazel Hawke’s victory celebrations in Canberra’s Tally Room. Throughout his career, Neville also photographed Australian prime ministers including Malcolm Fraser and John Howard.
By 1988, Neville’s years of experience and talent behind the camera saw him become Head Photographer and Department Head of the ACP Photographic Department.
It was a remarkable progression from the young copyboy who had first walked through ACP’s doors decades earlier.
The Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and Beyond
Although Neville retired from ACP in 2000, his career behind the camera was far from over.
He became Photographic Manager at the Sydney Sports Centre for SOCOG during the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, another defining Australian event Neville had the opportunity to experience from behind the lens.
He later worked as a photographer with Woman’s Day and freelanced for Channel 7 and other clients.
After decades spent documenting other people’s stories, Neville and his wife, Janette, eventually stepped away from studio life to enjoy travelling together.
In 2019, they settled in Mount Coolum on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, where Neville’s photography began to take on a different focus.
Finding Beauty Closer to Home
After a career photographing musicians, celebrities, politicians and world-changing events, Neville found new inspiration in the natural world around him.
Birds and nature became favourite subjects, allowing him to continue doing what he had done for much of his life – observing the world, finding the moment and capturing it through his camera.
It is a fitting new chapter for someone whose photographs have documented such an extraordinary period of Australian history.
