Care for your loved one: An invaluable support

Mum has a fall and everything changes.

If you have older family members, you may have lived through this experience or one like it. Home care can make all the difference when something like this happens and help to prevent a crisis such as a fall or wandering out of the house from happening.

  • Cooking and light housekeeping
  • Laundry and changing bed linen
  • Grocery shopping and errands
  • Companionship and exercise
  • Bathing, dressing and grooming assistance
  • Transportation to medical appointments, the supermarket or pharmacy
  • Assisting with walking and transferring from bed to wheelchair
  • Status reporting to family
  • Medication reminders

When would home care be useful?

Home care can be a vital lifeline. Read Ann’s story:

Ann is a spritely 93-year-old who lives with her husband in their own home. Ann’s husband, Jim, has early-stage dementia and she has been his primary carer. She cooks the meals, does the housework and still drives to the shops for groceries. Ann gets a simple cold which then turns into pneumonia. Ann is hospitalised for two nights and receives IV antibiotics and fluids since she is also dehydrated. When she goes home, Jim is completely overwhelmed with the task of taking care of her. Ann’s daughter decides it is time for home care to help them. She makes enquiries to arrange 24-hour care. The Carer reminds Ann to do her breathing exercises, encourages her to drink water and makes nutritious meals. Having care for Ann speeds up her recovery while also keeping Jim happy and healthy.

What can home care assist with?

There is so much that Home Care Carers do that is vital for the support of those wanting to maintain their independence including:

Companionship and Socialisation

Isolation and loneliness are recognised as an increasingly serious and growing problem for older Australians. In-Home Carers provide conversation and encourage socialisation. They can also be a nurturing and comforting companion and re-instill meaning and purpose in life.

Not all family carers are able to be a 24-hour support or companion to an ageing family member. The option of an in-home Carer relieves the burden for families who still want to provide support, but can’t be there every day.

Nutrition and Hydration

Nutrition and hydration are critical to health and recovery. Dehydration is a serious problem and can result in frequent hospitalisations if it is not managed. Poor nutrition has also been implicated in slower recovery from illness and an increase in hospitalisation. Carers can shop for food, encourage fluid intake and make meals. They can also reinforce and track any special dietary requirements.

Heart and Lung Health

Supporting seniors in light exercise and healthy eating can benefit their overall heart and lung health. Carers can also encourage deep breathing to prevent pneumonia and in some cases, check blood pressure.

Transportation and Errands

Transportation is a significant challenge for many people. Most of us know of an older person who continues to drive, despite feeling that this may no longer be the best choice. Although it is hard to give up driving, having an alternative can make the decision easier. In-Home Carers can provide this valuable service, whether it is to attend important appointments or for socialising.

Dressing, Bathing and Transferring

You may have had the experience of being physically limited by an accident or injury. If you have had this experience, you know how challenging it can be to do seemingly simple things like get dressed or shower, not to mention cook, clean or drive. This situation is made even more challenging the older we get.

Having home care services means a Carer can assist with these routine daily activities. Things like getting out of bed, showering, getting dressed and also monitoring mobility. In-home Carers can also help someone transfer from the bed to the toilet. Whatever the task, home care for the elderly bridges the gap that is often needed in order to offer safety and support in a familiar environment.

Light Exercise & Movement

A Carer can help reinforce and encourage light exercise and physical therapy activities. Movement after illness or surgery is critical to healing. Physiotherapy gets people on the right track but in most cases, there is an expectation of in-home activity and exercise by the individual. A in-home Carer can monitor those exercises to make certain they are done safely and adequately to ensure positive progress.

Rehabilitation and Recovery

Recovery for most of us means getting back to our previous level of functionality. Recovery in older adults generally takes longer and other co-occurring medical conditions can complicate the rehabilitation process.

An In-Home Carer can be an invaluable support for recovery in any number of situations including hospitalisation, an illness, a rehab stay or general decline that results in frailty. A good care plan developed the Home Care Assistance Care Team with feedback from the family and individual, can encourage a safe rehabilitation journey to recovery.

Choosing the right Home Care Provider
Choosing the right Home Care services for you or your loved one can be a difficult time. It can be hard to know what questions to ask, and if the support you require now as well as into the future will be appropriately catered for to your preferences and standards. To help you work through the selection process, we developed our Home Care Company Checklist to assist with due diligence and selecting the right care requirements for you or your loved one.

This is the best home care company in Australia !
As a former employee of this company working in the office and as a Carer, I cannot recommend this company enough. They genuinely care for their clients and employees. I loved working there with... Jeremy and his staff, but unfortunately had to leave due to relocation. I would not hesitate to recommend HCA Syd East to all clients who are aged and/or with disabilities to engage this service provider for all their vital services to enable you to live and enjoy staying in your own home and to be as independent as possible. Jeremy and his staff really listen to your needs, goals and aspirations and do their very best to match you up with a compatible and suitably qualified Carer. Nothing is too much trouble.read more

Jeremy is a really good man, he has fantastic family values and cares for everyone. I would definitely recommend Health Care Assistance to help you and your family
Home Care Assistance run by Jeremy and Samantha, a lovely couple with a caring attitude and a family themselves. After bringing my Mum to Sydney and needing expert help immediately I found HCA online... and liked their story. As soon as they walked in our door, we knew we were safe. I liked the fact that there was direct contact with the owners and nothing was too much trouble. The carers selected for Mum were perfect for her and very capable. Unfortunately Mum has had to move to a nursing home now but I would happily recommend this wonderful business to anyone with aged care needs.read more
