The Christmas Catch-Up Checklist: Subtle Signs Your Loved One May Need Extra Support at Home

Christmas brings families together in a way that the rest of the year rarely allows. Amidst the joy, shared meals and slow summer days, many families begin to notice gentle changes in an older loved one. These signs are often subtle on their own, but when seen together, they can paint a clearer picture of how someone is coping and if they need more support at home.

Here are some of the most common changes families notice during their Christmas visit:

Changes in the Home Environment

The fridge might be emptier than usual, expired food may be left behind, or the home may feel more cluttered and harder to move through. These can be signs that daily tasks are becoming more difficult.

Differences in Personal Care

Wearing the same clothes for several days, changes in grooming, or signs of reduced hygiene can indicate that personal care tasks are becoming too much on their own.

Memory or Behavioural Changes

Mixing up medications, forgetting conversations, missing appointments or leaving bills unpaid can signal cognitive changes or increased overwhelm.

Mobility and Physical Challenges

Unsteadiness, slower walking, unexplained bruises or hesitancy moving around the home can point to declining mobility, which increases the risk of falls.

Emotional and Social Withdrawal

If your loved one seems quieter than usual, turns down social invitations or shows signs of sadness or loneliness, it may be an early sign that they’re lacking meaningful connection or support.
