Meet Faye: A Heart for Care and a Homegrown Hero in Sydney’s East
For Sydney local Faye Tzavaras, caring runs in the family, and from the heart. Born and raised in Sydney to Greek migrant parents, Faye has spent over 16 years supporting older Australians to live safely and independently in their homes. She speaks fluent Greek, which has helped her build instant rapport with many of her clients over the years.
“I grew up with my grandmother living in our home,” Faye shares. “When she became unwell, I helped care for her. That experience stayed with me. I saw how much older people need to feel heard, supported and treated with kindness. From then on, I knew I wanted to do this work.”
Fast forward to 2025, and Faye’s warmth, reliability, and deep commitment to her clients has not gone unnoticed. In November, she was named Champion of the Year – Sydney East, the most prestigious honour at the Home Care Assistance Carer Awards.
Champion of the Year is awarded to a care worker who lives our values in every sense — in how they care, how they lead, and how they support those around them. Faye hit her two-year milestone earlier this year and continues to go above and beyond for every client she supports. From early starts to late finishes, social support to personal care, Faye does it all with kindness, professionalism, and grace.
Faye joined Home Care Assistance with a strong sense of purpose and a deep respect for the people she cares for. For her, it’s not just about completing tasks, it’s about building trust, lifting spirits, and being a consistent presence in someone’s life.
“Many of my long-term clients look forward to my visits,” Faye explains. “Some are lonely, and when I walk in and hear, ‘I’ve been waiting for you!’, it’s a reminder that I’m not just a carer, I’m part of their life, their routine, their comfort.”
Whether she’s arranging a special outing, taking a beloved dog for a walk, or just enjoying a warm cup of tea and a chat, Faye brings warmth, laughter and stability to every visit.
“I believe everyone deserves to maintain their dignity and independence, no matter their age or health,” she says. “Even small things – like helping someone pick their outfit or involving them in meal prep – give back a sense of control and pride.”
Outside of work, Faye loves cooking for her family, planning celebrations, and travelling to new places, which often becomes a source of joy for her clients too.
“They always want to see the photos and hear the stories!”
She describes her work as “incredibly rewarding” and encourages anyone thinking about a career in aged care to embrace the challenge.
“You need patience, resilience, and a true desire to connect. You can’t do this work for the paycheck, but if you show up with an open heart, the love and wisdom you receive back is more than worth it.”
Faye also credits Home Care Assistance for creating a workplace culture where carers feel respected and supported. “They understand that we are the heart of the business. The training, the resources, the communication – it all helps us deliver quality care with confidence. The Sydney office team are just wonderful. I know I can call them anytime and feel truly listened to.”
