Home Care Assistance Sydney Supports National Stroke Week

At Home Care Assistance Sydney, we’re proud to support National Stroke Week — a powerful opportunity to spread awareness about one of Australia’s most serious health conditions.

Stroke is a leading cause of death and long-term disability in Australia, and many people still don’t realise how crucial it is to act quickly when symptoms appear. That’s why this week, we’re encouraging everyone in the Sydney community to understand the signs, take them seriously, and seek medical help straight away.

What Is a Stroke — and Why Every Minute Matters

A stroke happens when the blood supply to the brain is suddenly interrupted — either by a clot (ischemic stroke) or a bleed (haemorrhagic stroke). When this occurs, brain cells are deprived of the oxygen and nutrients they need to survive.

Without urgent treatment, these cells can start dying within minutes. The faster someone receives medical attention, the greater their chances of recovery — and the lower the risk of long-term disability.

Recognising the Signs: Think F.A.S.T.

The Stroke Foundation promotes the F.A.S.T. test as a quick and simple way to identify a potential stroke:

  • F – Face: Is one side of the face drooping?
  • A – Arms: Can they lift both arms, or is one weak?
  • S – Speech: Is their speech slurred, or are they struggling to speak?
  • T – Time: If you see any of these signs, call 000 immediately.

Even if the symptoms only last a short time, they may be a sign of a transient ischemic attack (TIA) — also known as a “mini-stroke” — which often leads to a more serious stroke if ignored.

Additional Symptoms to Be Aware Of

While F.A.S.T. identifies the most common warning signs, a stroke can also cause:

  • Sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body
  • Difficulty understanding speech or forming words
  • Blurred or lost vision in one or both eyes
  • Dizziness, balance problems, or sudden falls
  • A sudden, severe headache that has no known cause

If something doesn’t seem right — don’t take chances. Call 000.

How to Respond in a Stroke Emergency

If someone near you shows any signs of stroke:

  1. Call 000 immediately. Don’t wait to see if the symptoms improve.
  2. Note the time the symptoms began — this information is vital for emergency responders.
  3. Stay with the person, keep them calm, and follow the emergency operator’s instructions.

Preventing Stroke: Small Steps Make a Big Difference

While some strokes can happen without warning, many can be prevented by managing your health. Here are some key habits to reduce your stroke risk:

  • Have regular health checks for blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar
  • Eat a balanced, heart-healthy diet
  • Stay physically active
  • Quit smoking and limit alcohol consumption
  • Manage stress and prioritise good sleep

A healthier lifestyle can lower your risk and help you live more confidently and independently.
